Butterfly Meanderings.......2002-2003

I always think of this one as a "spring" quilt and one year I took some quilts outside to take pictures of them with the spring flowers. These 2 are my favorite quilts for hanging in the apple tree :-)
This was a very simple quilt! Nothing but squares sewn together. I bought pre-cut 4" squares on Ebay that all have butterflies on them. I arranged them with the idea that I would quilt meandering butterfly flight paths along each particular fabric ending in a butterfly. Well.....this was my very first machine quilting attempt and I found it was harder than I thought it would be! I realized that I would not be able to quilt the butterflies at the end squares and that they would not show up anyway! So.....I added little 3-D butterflies here and there!

I loved all the fabrics! I tried to take a picture of the quilting, but it is hard to see on these colorful fabrics.

Two of the small butterflies I tacked on.

I learned a several things from this quilt. I started it in 2002 and got the main body finished and didn't know what I wanted for a border. I took it with me to Seattle to visit my sister and we went to a quilt shop where I picked out 4 possible fabrics. She talked me into using all 4! She also taught me how to miter them together at the corners and they turned out better than I thought they might. The quilting was a learning process and after the thread broke for the 20th or so time, I was ready to scream, but I persevered and learned some patience!
Finished it up in 2003.
Small lap quilt.....54" square.

this is my VERY favorite of everything you've showed so far. The colors combos are amazing and I love the way the border sets it off.

Sandy: If you know how to use a sewing machine, you could make a quilt just like this one....it is by far the easiest thing I've shown :-) I didn't even cut the squares out!

The butterfly fabric is beautiful! And so is the quilt. I like the border choices also.

I am really focused on fabric at the moment. I am kind of making up a quilt top as I go and yesterday did 5 crazy quilt squares with 5 different pink shades and patterns. I also have 4 embroiderer squares on a beige background, so I now have 9 (3-3-3) blocks for the center piece. Now I need an anchor for it all, with maybe a few brownish tones I think so I'm still hunting for fabric. Next week maybe I 'll slip across the border to Houlton, Maine and see what I might find there.

I am enjoying this blog very much. Your work is so lovely.

Ann: This sounds wonderful! I can't wait to see a picture of it! Fabric is addictive :-) I have a huge stash and still keep buying. You can buy on-line, also. There are lots of pre-cut squares avialable on Ebay....that is where the butterfly fabrics came from. It's a nice way to get a lot of something you are looking for with the same theme or color.
