*I just changed the eye of my squirrel and I think it looks a lot better than the one below. The button was all wrong....a squirrel's eye is almond shaped. Now I don't like the ear....a little too big, but that is harder to change, so it will stay the way it is!
I'm having a lot of fun working on these nature blocks, but applique is sure a lot of hard work, and I feel like I have "6 thumbs" working on these little things.
The Chickadee block is basically done. I don't want to overwhelm the applique by doing too much of the crazy quilt stitching, so I am doing less than I would normally do on the blocks.
Today I finished up this poppy for another block. I want to get several of the appliques done so I have a variety of blocks to do the hand stitching on in my spare time.
My squirrel block. I'm not happy with the eye and am trying to decide whether to rip it out and change it. the button is a little bit too big...maybe.... and the circle around it not obvious enough. *NOTE: See eye change at the top of the post. Maybe you can't see the difference, but I can and like it better :-)
My second bird block....a Red-bellied Woodpecker. Not too bad! I'm trying to pick ones that aren't too complicated . I may do a Cardinal next and a Goldfinch, I hope. We'll see. I have 12 blocks to put whatever I want on.

Wonderful job Mary! I like them all! Do you stich by hand? Are all the patterns your own.? I'd love to see the finished project. Keeping it for yourself?

oops! I was into Steve's blog about our chickens, and forgot to sign out. It was really me.

Mary, this is going to be wonderful! I can't wait to see it in person....
Becky: You had me going there! I was just about to check and find out who Fire runner was, when I read your next comment :-) Yes, I am stitching by hand. the birds and squirrel were sort of based on some paper pieced patterns I have...can't think of the author at the moment. I just round out the designs and then turn them into needle turn applique for this. I designed the poppy by looking at some photos of other people's patterns and drawing my own.
Rose: Thanks! I'm really loving doing it. I'm ready to stop and do some stitching for awhile. I get cross eyed trying to do all that little picky needle turn applique, but it is worth it so far.
I love what you are doing, Mary! This is going to be a gorgeous quilt! Yep, applique to me is so hard, too. I like doing the embroidery work better. Like the change you made to the eye!
Marie: Thanks....I am having fun working on it and can take my time and have no particular goal for the finished blocks until I see them.
Thanks for coming by my quilt blog and seeing my progress and commenting!
These are fantastic. It's going to be a fabulous quilt.
