Every year our quilt guild announces a "challenge" at the beginning of the year and we have until the May meeting to turn in at least a finished top This years challenge was to do something that showed "flying".....whatever flying means to us...... "through the quilter's eye" (which is the name for our quilt show in September. Here are all the ones that were turned in last night.....some unfinished, so their flying details might not be complete yet.
This one is my entry and I call it "SkyWatch Friday" because I based it on some of the photos that I have used for Skywatch Friday. The Mallard duck block was based on a photo that Ann at Nature Trails, Camera Tales graciously allowed me to use and she even helped me make a pattern for it. The moon, the geese over the field, the steeple were all my photos and the sunset and clouds are just generic "Skywatch" type photos. The "Flying Geese" and "Birds of the Air" blocks were to add to the flying idea. I'll be posting more photos of this later.
2 embroidered birds
A guardian angel flying
Beautiful birds done on an embroidery machine...these were really pretty up-close!
Butterflies scattered on a quilt top
A very cute bee.....she even had some help from her grandson on this
More lovely butterflies with pinwheels
A different sort of butterfly with ribbons flying
Birds
This one is unfinished and she has an explanation for the chess board and plane and flying geese.
A piece of African fabric with motion in the quilting. She called this the "the flying fickle finger of fate".
A salute to a Vietnam paratrooper vet.
Another butterfly......a popular subject :-)
Patriotic horses with flying manes....I love this!
A hummingbird and flowers....lovely!
Kites!
I love this with the butterfly "flying" off the edge!
This is not her actual entry....it wasn't done yet...but she brought it because it had a bird on it.
This is very unfinished, but the Wizard of Oz quilt with show flight in the tornado, flying monkeys, witch, etc when done.
When pigs fly!
This is a beautiful soaring plane....unfinished, but already gorgeous.
Sailboat flying in the wind
Flying down the hill on a sled!
This is a very perfectly done small quilt with whirling flying geese blocks.

Love all that flying... of every kind. My favorite is the birds of the air. Your guild gals did a great job.
Wow..it looks like you have a large quilt guild. I love the theme of flying and whatever it means to each person. I really thought yours was great! It looked like many ladies chose to do a wall hanging sized one. That would have been my choice. I may have to come back and visit this post again Mary. I enjoyed looking at all of the creative choices.
Latane: It was a fun challenge!
Brenda: We have about 150 members, I think. Most are active. There were 27 who took part in this challenge. Most people do wall hangings to get it done in time. The limits were no smaller than 20x20 and no larger then 60x60...not sure all followed that.
These were fun to look at , I love the one...now what did you call it, fickled finger of fate or something, african...etc.
Sandy: I thought sure the horses would be your favorite!
